What are the best paying courses? Different degrees give their graduates different starting salaries. We have broken down for you where you earn the most.

A few basics


The basic salary, the variable salary (e.g. bonuses or similar) and all non-monetary company benefits, such as a company car or membership in the gym, are calculated as salary. We also look at the gross salaries. While net salaries depend on many other factors, such as personal life situation, gross salaries are best compared with each other.

All data in this article refers to the Stepstone Graduate Salary Report 2021. If you want to go deeper, you can download it from the Stepstone website.


Stepstone maintains a salary database of hundreds of thousands of salaries from people of all ages and professions, from different regions and industries, from executives to young professionals. For the salary report for graduates, the salaries from this database were examined. Only data records from the period from September 2019 to August 2020 from people with at least 2 years of professional experience were taken into account. A total of around 13,000 data sets were taken into account for this report.

Entry-level salaries with a bachelor's degree


The highest starting salary with a bachelor's degree is €47,073 on average and is achieved with a degree in industrial engineering. Design students achieve the lowest starting salary at €34,120.


Entry-level salaries with a master’s degree


The highest starting salary with a master’s degree is €59,486 on average for medical graduates. The lowest starting salary with a master's degree is given to design graduates with an average salary of €40,470.


Not all courses are available with a bachelor's degree as a professional qualification. Therefore, we are looking at the starting salaries with a master's degree or a comparable degree, such as the state examination in medicine or law.


Entry-level salaries Bachelor or Master


Anyone who has a master's degree studies longer, is more qualified and has a correspondingly higher starting salary. The average starting salary with a bachelor's degree is €42,169. The average starting salary with a master’s degree is €47,370.

Overall, salaries are naturally higher with a master's degree - from the highest-paying degree to the lowest-paying degree.


The average total salary of graduates in their first job is €45,395.

Entry salary after university


Graduates from different universities have different starting salaries. The fact that the salaries differ depending on the university can of course have various reasons and depends very much on the course. It is not automatic that you earn more just because you study at a certain university.


The average starting salaries of universities depend, among other things, on which courses are offered and what kind of reputation they have.
